MGT’s competition proposal for Sydney’s MCA has won the Architectural Review Future Project Prize.

Tonkin Zulaikha Greer and Janet Laurence have won the competition to design an Australian war memorial in Hyde Park, London The competition proposal for The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, by Francis Jones Morehen Thorp (MGT Sydney) has won the .Best of Show. and category awards in the Architectural Review Future Project Prize presented at MIPIM, an international property market and conference held in Cannes. The award is made jointly by The Architectural Review and MIPIM Kerstin Thompson presented a masterclass at the Semaine Internationale at the School of Architecture, Nancy, France Connell Wagner have been voted the number one Australian consulting engineer for Building Services and Structural Engineering in the recent World Architecture Top 300 Partners Survey. The project also won the Commercial Interior Award. The Commercial Exterior Award went to McConnel Smith & Johnson for the Wollongong Hospital Redevelopment. John Wardle Architects and Jackson Clements Burrows were joint winners of the Residential Interior Award, for the Kent Street House and the Anglesea Residence respectively. Drew Heath Architects won the Residential Exterior Award for Zig Zag Cabin. The Public Spaces and Temporary Structures Award went to Lab architecture studio in association with Bates Smart for Federation Square: NGV Australia and Bligh Voller Nield won the Dulux Effects Award for A New Workplace Two symposiums on Housing Design in Indigenous Australia will launch TAKE 2, the second issue of the RAIA’s annual journal. Chaired by Paul Memmott, the first will be held in Brisbane on 21 August, with a follow-up in Sydney on 8 October Kerb, the annual landscape journal from RMIT, is looking for contributors.

TASMANIA
UTasmania’s School of Architecture has been named as a “best practice example in the discipline of architecture in Australia” in a recent report commissioned by the Australian Building Energy Council The RAIA’s Tasmanian Architectural Narratives weekend at Cranbrook has been postponed until next year The State Government and Hobart City Council are planning to demolish another key 1950s building. Conceived as part of the Curtin Government’s postwar planning initiative, the building formed an emblematic entry to the city in conjunction with the still-extant fountain roundabout, the now-demolished train station and the nowdemolished olympic dive tower.

AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY
Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn has appointed Andrew Metcalf as a consultant specializing in urban design and masterplanning. Melinda Dodson, James Andrews and Ian Donlan have also been appointed as associates Kringas Architects and Architectus have been awarded “equal second prize”, and half the second place prize money, in the Federation Place competition for Canberra’s civic centre. No first prize was given The ACT Government’s High Quality Sustainable Design programme is to be reformed. Changes include: the introduction of impact criteria, easier-to-understand site analysis, clearer consultation protocol and consistency of advice and timeliness of processing.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The West Australian Planning Commission has granted a conditional redevelopment to Multiplex for a 17-storey apartment building on the Raffles site Jennifer Lorrimar has won the third Peter Hunt Travel Prize Chris Barnett and Michael Oppenheim, of Melbourne’s Sustainable Built Environments have won the Department of Housing and Work’s inaugural Sustainable Housing Design Competition for the Broome region. Second Place went to Michael Patroni of the CODA Studio/Space Agency Alliance, while third place went to A Arizmendi and A Escruceri, of Sydney Construction has begun on the Gosnells Civic Complex, designed by Woodhead International, the first part of the Gosnells Town Centre Revitalisation Scheme.

VICTORIA

NYKA, by Ivan Rijavec, has acted as a lightning rod for debates about Melbourne 2030 in Melbourne newspapers.

The State Government has merged the Urban and Regional Land Corporation and Melbourne Docklands into a single authority. John Tabart, formerly CEO of Melbourne Docklands, is the chief executive of the new body Dimity Reed has been inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women 2003 NKYA, a development by Ivan Rijavec in Fitzroy has received planning approval from the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, sparking much debate in Melbourne newspapers as to the value of mediumdensity development and the development directions outlined in Melbourne 2030 Stage one of the redevelopment of the Northcote Town Hall by Garner Davis opened in late March. Designed by George R. Johnson and built incrementally from 1887, the building also has significant 1930s interiors by Harry Norris Demetra Manolas was awarded the RAIA Bates Smart Architects Graduation Prize, at UMelbourne’s “Architecture Unwrapped” series Leon van Schaik is now the Innovation Professor of Architecture at RMIT Dianne Peacock’s exhibition Super- Deformed Owl Girl Robot Rides Again! showed at Honeyeaters, an artist-run gallery Proposals for Westgate Memorial Park, commemorating those who have lost lives during the construction of the Westgate Bridge and other industrial accidents, were on public display in March. The six shortlisted designs were by Coomes Consulting, Mark McWha, ARM, Aspect Melbourne, Black Kosloff Knight and Anthony Styant-Browne Architect Peter Myers has completed a design to convert VCA’s Building L into a facility to house the Joseph Brown Collection of Australian Art Morgan McKenna is dividing to become Paul Morgan Architects and Michael McKenna Pty Ltd UMelbourne’s Deans Lecture series is underway. This includes Inaugural Professorial Lectures by Kim Dovey and Philip Goad, and lectures by Colin Rowe, Hiromi Fuji and others Kevin Poyner and Cox Sanderson Ness is designing a cultural centre on the site of the former Bonegilla Migrant Reception Centre in Albury Wodonga The National Trust is seeking to list the silos beneath Richmond’s Nylex clock after a planning permit application was lodged to build an office development on the site Gray Puksand is developing concept plans for the Bourke Place Precinct, a multi-million dollar redevelopment at the western end of the CBD The State Government has established a Department of Sustainability and Environment. This will have an overarching strategic role as well as covering the planning functions of the Department of Infrastructure and the environmental functions of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

NORTHERN TERRITORY
Build Up Design are working on a clinic for the Tiwi Islands The Architects Studio is preparing a conservation and management plan for the historic Catholic Church precinct at Nguiu on Bathurst Island. The practice is also designing “an exciting new house” on the waterfront at Bayview Haven The Northern Territory Government is looking to develop a number of health-related projects including a new health clinic at Nguiu and a renal clinic in Tennant Creek.

NEW SOUTH WALES
ARM has won a design excellence competition for an apartment building for Multiplex at Kings Wharf, Sydney Tonkin Zulaikha Greer have won the tender for the new NSW Contemporary Performance Centre located inside the Eveleigh Carriage Works The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority has shortlisted three as-yetunnamed practices in its limited competition for Elizabeth Macarthur Bay, the last waterfront site on the Pyrmont Peninsula The UTS School of Architecture’s public lecture series is underway, focussing on distinguished UTS graduates Foster and Partners has won the Sydney City Council design excellence competition for the Regent site Lord Mayor, Frank Sartor, has announced an upgrade of Darlinghurst Road and the establishment of a Neighbourhood Service Centre which will include a new library as part of an effort to upgrade Kings Cross when it becomes part of the City of Sydney Peter Myers has moved to Inverell in northern NSW, where he has become a partner in Bingara Cypress in order to pursue his “life-project”, the Knockabout-Walkabout housing system The State Government has given planning approval for the Parramatta Civic Place Master Plan Bates Smart has promoted Virginia Edwards, Guy Lake, Natalie Lane-Rose and Roger Parolin to associates Allen Jack + Cottier is celebrating its 50th year of practice Parramatta Rail Link has released a concept masterplan for the new Chatswood Transport Interchange, by the NSW Government Architect and Daryl Jackson Robin Dyke Architects The RAIA NSW Chapter has instigated a “presentation to the jury” day as part of the state awards programme USydney has awarded honorary degrees to Jørn Utzon and Romaldo Giurgola Applications for the Board of Architects of NSW’s Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarships for 2003 close at the end of July.

QUEENSLAND
ASA Suters Architects are working on “Swell”, a hotel and apartment complex at Burleigh on the Gold Coast John Simpson has received an honorary doctorate from QUT The Queensland Heritage Council has listed the La Boite Theatre, designed by Blair Wilson in 1972, a move which is opposed by the theatre company Graham Meltzer, architect and photographer, has won Australian Institute of Professional Photographers’ Qld Commercial Photographer of the Year award on the basis of four submitted images Powell Dodds Thorpe is celebrating 65 years of practice.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Marjorie Simpson has died in Adelaide aged 79. The first female life fellow of the SA Chapter of the RAIA, she reinvigorated the Small Homes Service (later the Architects Advisory Service) in the late fifties and was involved with the service for 25 years. She was also a partner in Simpson and Simpson The UniSA School of Architecture and Rising Sun Pictures collaborated on “Spatial Cinematics, a forum to “delve into the intersections and interstices of digital media, cultural theory, computing technology, film, architecture and space” Fran Bonatohas been elected as SA Chapter President of the RAIA. Damian Madigan, Christine Teichert and Alan Taylor have been elected as new chapter councillors Brian Polomka, architect and former mayor of Norwood has died aged 80. Polomka was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia for services to local government and architecture Max Pritchard’s Hugh Hamilton Winery Tasting Room won the Civic Trust Award for Buildings in their Setting The symposium Travellers II: Reviewing Architectural Theory took place in the Coonawarra at the end of April.
